*10/19/06 Steering Committee Meeting Notes*
*Attendees: *Dawn Hemminger, David Smith, Peter Locke, Sam Star, Mary Lou Olson, Holly Hoag, Darlene Sozinho
*Scheduled Meetings:*
We’re going to stick with scheduled meetings on the 14^th of each month at 7PM, however, if the date lands on a Saturday or Sunday, the meeting will get moved to the following Tuesday at 7PM. The next meeting will be on Tuesday November 14^th at 7PM at Darlene Sozinho’s home at 1106 NW 60th St.
*SUNI (Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods Initiative) 14th Ave Street Level Survey:*
See http://www.sustainableseattle.org/Programs/SUNI/ for more info on this project. We participated in surveying 14^th Ave last year for this project and have been asked to participate again this year. The information gathered by this group last year was used extensively by our group and Carlson Architects to develop our Vision Plan.
Peter confirmed with SUNI to conduct the survey the morning of Saturday November 18^th. We’ll need about 8 volunteers who can volunteer 4 to 5 hours (2 hours for training and 2 for survey). I’m thinking we should start at 9AM. We're going to try to get a meeting room at Sunset Bowl reserved again.
*Adopt A Street Cleanup Party:*
This will be held on the afternoon of Saturday November 18^th , say Noon to 4? Mary Lou will coordinate with the adopt a street folks. Holly will coordinate refreshments. We’ll need a warm place after the event for refreshments. Maybe Blowing Sands?
* *
*Brainstorm on projects for SDOT in case we get the $20,000 discretionary fund money we asked for, for next year:*
* Install garbage cans and use left over money to have them services
for a period time
* Upgrade existing crosswalks
* Bioswale demonstration project. (what’s a bioswale you may ask,
well check this out for inspiration,
http://www.seattle.gov/util/stellent/groups/public/@spu/@esb/documents/webcontent/drainaged_200406180834404.pdf)We
all agreed that a bioswale would make the most impact.
*Strategy for advertising our plan and informing city officials:*
We need to get pamphlets and presentation material together first. Once this is done, we can start a monthly road show and visit different organizations and city officials and groups. Right now, we need to get funding, e.g. small sparks, other neighborhood grants, small change for a big difference grant, etc.
Fund raising/advertising ideas include pamphlets asking for donation, t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers. Maybe have some kind of fund raiser at the Autumn Night Out party?
*Autumn Night Out Event Saturday December 9^th at Blowing Sands from 6 to 9 PM:*
We thought it would be a great idea to coincide Ballard Art Walk at Blowing Sands with a 14^th Ave Autumn Night Out Event. David graciously volunteered his space. He can provide glass blowing demonstrations during this event. I’ll see if I can also set up a chocolate truffle dipping demonstration too. We can provide some food and refreshments and also have folks bring food for a potluck. We can also display our designs, provide copies of our vision plan and also maybe figure out a way to start raising some money at this event. We should probably also have a raffle. Holly said she and Casey could help and David will also help out. We just need someone to organize the event.
*Getting 14^th Ave as a classroom project for the UW Landscape Design Department:*
Mary Lou has started attending meetings with the UW Landscape Design Department and citizens of Magnolia who are getting a new street design and installation thanks to UW. This program gets grants from the city for these projects. They are very interested in our project and it would be a windfall to become one of their projects.
*Groundswell General Meeting November 20^th 7PM at Sunset Hill Community Center:*
This will be a dessert potluck meeting. Steve Nichols will be giving a presentation. There will also be an opportunity for us to plug our project.
*TO DO:*
* *
*Darlene:*
* Advertise SUNI survey and street cleanup party in Ballard Tribune
1 week and 2 weeks before the event if possible.
* Advertise Autumn Night Out party in Ballard Tribune and look
* In general, look into other ways to advertise events since posting
on telephones is a bit too wet in the fall/winter time.
*David:*
* Get the Autumn Night Out Event advertised in the flyer for Ballard
Art Walk
*Dawn:*
* Send Evite for SUNI survey, street cleanup party and Autumn Night Out
* Contact Thomas Whittemore to get info about a $750 neighborhood
grant Sam Star mentioned that is available for startup group
funding. Also collect forms for Small Sparks, Small change for a
big difference, Starbucks make your mark grant.
* Contact Courtney at Starbucks to see if we can get adopt a street
or SUNI volunteers from his store to qualify for a Make your mark
grant.
*Holly:*
* Coordinate refreshments (coffee, juice pastries) for SUNI survey
morning meeting and food/drink for street cleanup folks (soup or
chili, hot cider, water).
* Ask Ballard Market if we could advertise cleanup party and/or the
Autumn Night out events on the marquee. Also ask them if we could
have flyers prominently displayed in the grocery store.
*Mary Lou:*
* Coordinate with Adopt A Street Folks to get cleanup materials
delivered for Nov 18^th . Also ask them to move one of the signs
to north of Market Street.
* Invite your contacts interested in becoming more involved to our
next steering committee meeting (I can’t remember the names of
those folks you mentioned, but I think one was from the UW
landscape design dept)
* Continue communication with the UW landscape design dept.
*Peter:*
* Schedule a meeting with Deborah Kuznitz from Sustainable Seattle.
Dawn will also attend.
* Talk to Marty at the ReStore about making kiosks for our street to
post events. Shouldn’t be too expensive and should be painted with
graffiti resistant paint or a material that would deter graffiti,
e.g. dark or brightly colored textured surface. The kiosk should
also be able to be anchored down.
*Rob:*
* Reserve a room at Sunset Bowl for Nov 18^th from 8AM to 2PM for
the SUNI Survey
* Can we have Adopt A Street stuff dropped off at your place again?
* Post illegal dumping hotline *(**206-296-SITE (7483)* and graffiti
hotline (206-684-7587) numbers on our website.
* Get digital copy of Vision Plan from Peter and put up on the website.
